19 October 2009 Haas Technical Centre Programme Enjoys Robust Growth
Haas Automation plans to open several Haas Technical Education Centres (HTECs) in Europe during the remainder of this year. One comes on line at Berufsschule Knittelfeld, in Austria, early this month, and two open in Denmark, at Metal College Aalborg and Mercantec Handelsskole Viborg, later in October. “October is a busy month for the HTEC programme,” says Bert Maes, HTEC coordinator at Haas Automation Europe, “but we are also hopeful that an additional 12 HTECs will open in November and December, including another in Austria, up to five in Russia, three in Portugal, one in Poland, one in Azerbaijan and one more in Germany.” Every economic recovery following a recession leaves residual unemployment in the manufacturing sector as companies learn to increase production with fewer workers. Manufacturers invest in high-productivity capital equipment in order to minimize overhead costs. Thus, argues Haas Automation, recoveries bring increased demand for better-trained employees who have the skills to operate the new technology effectively. HTECs improve CNC technology students’ chances of forging careers in industry. Increasingly, they are also providing unemployed workers with the skills they need to rejoin the manufacturing labour force when business activity picks up. “Our established HTECs tell us that student registration is rising sharply,” reports Maes. This past spring, 10 Haas-equipped precision engineering teaching facilities—in Portugal, Sweden, Poland and Russia—joined the HTEC network. According to Maes, 2009 will come to a close with a flurry of additional grand openings. Haas Automation Europe opened 15 HTECs in 2008. By the end of this year, the number of European HTECs should be close to 40. “Haas Automation Europe and its partners are still investing in the young engineers Europe needs for a competitive future,” says Maes. “The HTEC network is growing quickly, and we’re also installing machines at hundreds of non-HTEC educational facilities, as they too recognize the importance of having access to the very latest CNC machine tools and technology.” For further information: Haas Automation Europe N.V.
