9 October 2009 Dimension Opens Sixth Global Design/3D Printing Contest
Dimension 3D Printing, a brand of Stratasys, has launched “Extreme Redesign: The Ultimate 3D Printing Challenge,” the sixth edition of its annual contest challenging CAD students worldwide to compete for not only the standard cash awards but also a new “Green Bonus” award for environmental consciousness. Competitors are encouraged to submit, by 1 February 2010, their most creative, useful and innovative product designs. Submissions may be an entirely original concept, or may introduce a new perspective for an everyday product, or may present a fresh vision of a famous piece of art, animation or architecture. Designs will be evaluated for creativity, usefulness, part integrity and aesthetics by a panel of independent judges from various industries. Dimension will again award nine student winners, to be selected next April, either $2,500 or $1,000 (approximately €1,715 or €684) in prize money. In addition, teachers of the three first-place student winners will receive a laptop computer for use in the classroom. This year’s Green Bonus award will recognize one student across all categories whose design best displays innovation in such areas as energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The Green Bonus winner will receive a gift voucher for $250 (about €172). “Each year, we look to refresh the contest with new ideas that challenge students and advance creativity in those areas most relevant to the fields of modern design and engineering,” says Tim Heller, managing director of Stratasys Europe. “With the Green Bonus, we hope to inspire and recognize creative thought in an area essential to fostering environmental and economic well-being worldwide.” To enter the contest in the School/College or University Engineering categories, students must identify an existing product and redesign it, making the original design better by adding new functionality or aesthetic characteristics. For submissions in the Art and Architecture category, the emphasis should be on originality and the overall beauty or aesthetics of the design.
