METAV 2010 to Be a Measure of the Industry’s Recovery

According to the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), the machine tool industry’s slump in its order bookings has bottomed out. This is particularly true for the large vendor nations meeting at metav 2010 in Düsseldorf February 23–27 for the year’s first international trade fair for the entire metalworking sector.

The VDW, which organizes metav in even-numbered years, says that 680 exhibitors from 26 countries will display their latest products and service capabilities for manufacturing technology and automation on a net exhibition area of around 32,000 m².

“The metav will show how far the customers for machine tools are beginning to emerge from their state of petrified shock,” opines Dr. Detlev Elsinghorst, the president of metav. He regards it as an encouraging sign that, in recent weeks and months, the number of exhibitors and the amount of floor space booked at metav 2010 have increased substantially.

“The firms have responded to the news that most of the early indicators are pointing upwards, and are keen not to miss out on a cyclical recovery now emerging at a very low level,” Elsinghorst explains.

metav 2010 will also serve as an indicator of the value of the strategies the sector will be deploying to emerge from the crisis, argues the VDW. Following the recent cataclysmic economic events, the entire capital goods industry is facing another difficult year bringing more major challenges. Consumers are asking about new products, such as cars with economical, eco-friendly engines and drive concepts, which will demand new approaches from industrial equipment suppliers. Meanwhile, there is an overall lower level of consumer demand to which the industry has to match its structures and concepts via cost-cutting and process optimization. In short, intelligent production technology is in high demand.

That is what production experts visiting metav 2010 can expect to find out about, both from the exhibitor displays and from the numerous special events the VDW has arranged in association with various industry partners. The latter cover the subjects of grinding, medical product manufacture, energy-efficiency for machine tools, automobile drives of the future, product life-cycle management and recruitment strategies to secure the future generations of skilled industry employees.
