24 February 2010 BMW Oracle Racing Selects CMS Machining Centres
CMS Industries, a subsidiary of CMS S.p.A., has announced its sponsorship collaboration as a designated official supplier of BMW Oracle Racing. The relationship began in 2008 when CMS supplied a CNC machining centre suitable for the manufacture of racing-yacht parts from a composite material of high-tech carbon fibre. The association with BMW Oracle Racing has enhanced CMS’s role in the racing field. The number of racing vehicles with composite parts being machined on CMS machining centres steadily increases with the company’s growing presence in sports applications that range from racing bicycles to components for Formula 1 cars. In announcing the Official Supplier programme, CMS area manager Giulio Gasparini said, “Our machine’s technical features, its price-to-performance ratio, and also the CMS company’s soundness and reputation in the machining of composite materials, especially in racing applications, have been the key factors enabling CMS to win its competition with other suppliers.” Tim Smyth, co-construction manager of BMW Oracle Racing, explains why the team has chosen the CMS machine. “Americas Cup yachts employ the latest technology in materials and construction processes. CNC-produced tools and finished parts are one of the most significant advances in yacht construction over the past decade, and they now play a crucial role in our build programme.” For BMW Oracle to be able to produce components quickly and preserve its design innovations, says Smyth, it is important that the company possess its own CNC machines. “We have used CMS machines extensively throughout the past two editions of the Americas Cup through the services of subcontractors,” he remarks. “Based on their performance, we choose CMS to supply our first machine in 2009.” For further information: CMS S.p.A.
