Plastics USA 2004 to Have Strong
International Component, SPI Promises

The sponsors of Plastics USA 2004, which will take place September 28–30 at McCormick Place in Chicago, promise that it will be more than just a national show. Officials of the Society of the Plastics Industry say that American attendees will discover new sources of technology from outside the United States even as international visitors encounter a wealth of products and services available from US suppliers.

At this year's edition of the show, which is held every three years, American attendees will see a significant number of international exhibitors in addition to overseas-based companies with long-established subsidiaries in the United States. Of 215 exhibitors responding to a survey conducted by SPI earlier this year, 22% will be coming to the show directly from other countries. Nine exhibitors will be coming from Germany, six each from Canada and Japan, and five each from the United Kingdom and China (including Hong Kong). The international exhibitors supply a wide range of primary and auxiliary machinery, tooling, sensors and testing instruments, additives, and specialized services.

"Plastics USA provides a broader scope for international transaction than smaller, more regional US plastics shows," says Jordan L. Morgenstern, vice president of trade shows for SPI. More than 350 exhibitors will occupy more than 65,000 ft² and attract more than 10,000 visitors.

Visitors to the show from outside the United States will be able to take advantage of assistance through the US Department of Commerce's International Buyer Program (IBP), whose purpose is to create new business opportunities for American companies by encouraging international attendance at US trade shows and putting these visitors from abroad in touch with US-based exhibitors. This year Plastics USA 2004 is the only plastics show selected by the Department of Commerce for the IBP program.

Through a worldwide network of US government contacts for prospective visitors, IBP promotes the event and helps to organize international visitor delegations. At the show itself, the IBP will staff an "International Center" at McCormick Place to be hosted by SPI and trade experts.

As part of the IBP program, the Department of Commerce's US and Foreign Commercial Service (US&FCS) is promoting Plastics USA 2004 through offices in 150 cities around the world, and has established a network of 70 contacts who can provide prospective visitors with information about attending the show or assist in organizing "country" delegations of visitors. A list of these contacts, chiefly US Commercial Service officials stationed in embassies and consulates, may be found at www.npe.org/international/contacts.

International visitors and US exhibitor representatives can set up meetings during the show at the International Center. US&FCS officers will be on hand to counsel visitors and exhibitors on the intricacies of international transactions.

The International Center at Plastics USA 2004 will be in the lobby of McCormick Place East and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 28 and 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 30. Translators will be on duty to assist visitors. Facilities will include a reception desk, meeting room, open lounge and credit card–operated telephones. Refreshments will be available during show hours.
